The Senate's latest effort to strip funds from public schools is called Senate Bill 7070. This bill diverts our precious tax dollars to private schools with no public oversight.
Senate Bill 7070 creates yet another voucher program they named "Family Empowerment" which uses property taxes to fund privately controlled schools. We, the public, have no idea who owns these schools, what they are teaching or how well the students are learning.
Our students and teachers deserve better from elected leaders in Tallahassee!
This massive bill rolls multiple pieces of education legislation into one enormous package. In addition to creating a deceptive voucher program, Senate Bill 7070 diverts money for teacher salaries to one-time "bonuses." Only teachers who meet certain criteria as determined by the state will qualify for them, giving many teachers no opportunity to apply. In addition, this bill removes existing funding for the bonuses and will require districts to use operating funds instead.
While SB 7070 does increase per student funding, the additional funding is mandated to be used for state-designed programs with no flexibility for schools to use the money where it is needed. And this year’s education train bill does nothing to address the urgent need for a comprehensive solution to our teacher shortage.
